Monmouth Civic Chorus – Ryan James Brandau, conductor. April 20, 2018.

Axelrod Performing Arts Center, Deal, NJ.  (Seat G110, $28).

Program
A Time for Us: The Leonard Bernstein Centennial.

Concert Program

Featuring: Andrea Del Guidice and Claire Leydon, sopranos; Jordon Weatherston Pitts, tenor; and Logan Tanner, countertenor.

With Special Guests: Jenna Bitow, Heather Varley, Ken Wasser, Jake Dylan, Zach Miller, and Patrick Sharpe.

This was the last of the three-concert series by the MCC this season.  All the music was written by Leonard Bernstein, some from his well-known works like “West Side Story” and Candide, and some from the more obscure ones such as “A White House Cantata.”

The invited guests all did very well, in a small auditorium (seats 737 per some search results), and with use of a sound system.  Of particular note was Claire Leyden who brought down the house with her spirited rendition of “Glitter and Be Gay.” Jordan Pitts did quite well also.

I knew the name Axelrod as a teenager in Hong Kong.  As a tropical fish hobbyist I had a collection of his books and magazines on how to maintain a fish tank.  He got in some trouble with a gift of musical instruments to the New Jersey Symphony and ended up in jail for a while.  He passed away last year.

The concert was reasonably well attended, and it would be repeated the following day.

At the conclusion of the concert.  To Brandau'r right were Pitts and Leyden, to his right Del Guidice and Tanner.

We had just gone to New York and Philadelphia the last two days.  Anne also spent most of the day at Holmdel Day, so she decided to skip.

The program was quite long, so by the time I got home it was 11 pm.
